Simon G. Mpata, 1942–1984
Biography
Simon G. Mpata was the youngest half-brother of Edward Saidi Tingatinga and one of the small circle who received direct instruction from him in Dar es Salaam. Of the first students, Mpata is generally regarded as the one whose style remained closest to his teacher's.
After Tingatinga's death in 1972, Mpata declined to train successors of his own and instead established an independent studio in Nairobi, Kenya, where he continued to paint until his death in 1984.
His work reached a wider international audience through the Japanese editor Kazumi Oguro, who discovered Mpata's paintings in Kenya, arranged an exhibition of his work in New York, and did much to introduce it to collectors in Japan.
