John Linda Amba, b. 1947
Biography
John Linda Amba (also recorded as January Linda) was born in Mozambique in 1947, of Makonde origin. He was introduced to Edward Saidi Tingatinga through Tingatinga's wife and joined the small circle of painters working alongside him in Dar es Salaam.
Amba began by assisting with the production of Tingatinga's paintings before developing a manner of his own, marked by expressive, forceful imagery within the shared Tingatinga vocabulary of birds, animals and village life.
After Tingatinga's death in 1972, Amba moved to Bagamoyo, on the Tanzanian coast, and gave up painting.
