Dan Rakgoathe
Biography
Daniel Sefudi “Dan” Rakgoathe (1937–2004) was a South African artist and printmaker, born in Randfontein. After studying at the Ndaleni art training centre, he continued at Rorke’s Drift. In 1967 he became the centre’s first full-time fine-arts student, completing his training in 1969.
Rakgoathe worked in linocut and etching. His images draw on African myths and legends while considering spiritual and philosophical subjects. His symbolic narratives reflect his own interests and should not be reduced to a uniform “Rorke’s Drift style.”
He later taught art and worked in cultural education, including at Mofolo Art Centre in Soweto. His prints circulated internationally and are represented in the Museum of Modern Art collection.
