Azaria Mbatha
Biography

Azaria Mbatha (1941–2018) was a South African artist whose printmaking joined Christian narratives with Zulu histories, symbols and lived experience. Born in Mahlabatini, KwaZulu-Natal, he encountered Swedish educator Peder Gowenius in 1962 and became one of the early artists associated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church Art and Craft Centre at Rorke’s Drift.

Mbatha developed a distinctive approach to linocut. His densely worked images combine biblical episodes with African settings and social themes. The intricate cutting and carefully ordered fields of his prints reflect an individual practice, rather than a uniform Rorke’s Drift style.

After further study in Sweden, Mbatha returned to South Africa in 1968 and taught textile screenprinting. His work entered international museum and exhibition contexts, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
