Malick Sidibé trained in design and jewellery in Bamako before beginning his photographic apprenticeship in 1955, going on to document the youth culture, music and nightlife of post-independence Mali. His black-and-white studio and street photography earned him the Golden Lion for lifetime achievement at the Venice Biennale, the first awarded to an African or photographer. Read full biography →
