Chéri Samba began his career apprenticing with sign painters on Kasa Vubu Avenue in Kinshasa in 1972, a scene that gave rise to one of the most vibrant schools of popular painting of the twentieth century. Known for his vivid, text-laden canvases addressing African identity and social commentary, his work is held in major international collections including the Centre Pompidou and MoMA.
