New Essay: Modern African Art

New Essay

Our new historical survey, Modern African Art: Schools, Workshops and Individual Visions, examines artistic education, decolonisation and individual authorship across the continent. It includes Cairo, Casablanca, Dakar, Zaria, Nsukka, Oshogbo, Khartoum, East Africa, the two Congos, Mozambique and South Africa.

A dedicated section considers Zimbabwean stone sculpture and the contested designation Shona sculpture. Numbered references and further reading connect the discussion to museum records, scholarly publications and archival research. The essay extends beyond the artists currently represented in the gallery.
