New Essay: Lamidi Fakeye and the Fakeye Family

New EssayOctober 9, 2026

Our new essay, Lamidi Fakeye and the Fakeye Family, explores Yoruba wood sculpture through a family of carvers from Ila-Orangun, Nigeria. It considers how apprenticeship, patronage and individual authorship shaped Lamidi’s work and the careers of other members of the family.

The essay introduces Akin Fakeye and Gani Fakeye, whose biographies and artist pages are now part of our Full Artists Directory. Works by both sculptors will be presented soon.
