New Artist: Marcel Gotène
We're pleased to welcome Marcel Gotène (1939–2013) to the gallery. Born in the Republic of the Congo, Gotène was discovered as a young painter by Pierre Lods, the French artist who founded the Poto-Poto School in Brazzaville.
Working alongside contemporaries Nicolas Ondongo, François Iloki and François Thango, Gotène became one of the school's best-known painters, working in its characteristic idiom of flat, decorative compositions in bright gouache and oil, populated by stylised figures.
