New Artist: Koffi Kouakou
We're pleased to welcome Koffi Kouakou (1962–2008) to the gallery. Born in Ahitou-Kongonou, Ivory Coast, into a family of goldworkers, Kouakou apprenticed under his father before relocating to Grand-Bassam.
Rather than produce the repetitive tourist carvings common among artisans of his generation, Kouakou sculpted miniature wooden replicas of everyday electronic objects — Walkmans, telephones, record players, sewing machines — a small selection of which is now available in his gallery.
