Almighty God, 1950

Born in Kumasi, Ghana in 1950, Kwame Akoto (signs ALMIGHTY GOD artworks) showed an interest in painting from an early age and displayed obvious talent.

Almighty God’s professional career began at fifteen with two local painters who taught him to paint signs and decorate taxis and lorries. He set up his own workshop in the mid-seventies in one of the most crowded and chaotic parts of Kumasi.

During this same period, Kwame Akoto embraced Christianity. He joined a Pentecostal sect known as the House of Faith Ministries and became a fervent preacher as well as a renowned healer. He then began calling himself “Almighty God,” the name with which he signs all his works.

International publications and African and European art scholars began to take interest in his paintings. André Magnin devoted a chapter to his work in *Contemporary Art of Africa*, and he was included in Susan Vogel’s exhibition *Africa Explores*.

In 2006, Almighty God held a large solo exhibition in Ghana at Alliance Française Accra.
