Phineas
Masaya,
1972
Phineas Masaya was born in 1972
in NYANGA, the eastern highlands of Zimbabwe. He attended his primary
education from 1980 to 1988 at masaya School which was named after
Masaya village, a village occupied by the Masaya only. Phineas attended
his secondary education at Vengere High School in Rusape from 1989
to 1992.
Phineas
Masaya came to Harare in 1993. Like his father, the late Moses Masaya,
Phineas became a sculptor "late" in life.
In 1994, his father taught him
and encouraged him to turn to stone.
Phineas Masaya, like his father
and his cousin Eddie, was deeply influenced by his grandmother.
This woman, with her strong personality brought him up telling him
traditional Shona stories (Ngano). This has influenced Phineas attitude
and beliefs.
Phineas Masaya is married and has
2 children, a boy and a girl. He currently lives and works in Chitungwiza.
