Nesbert
MUKOMBERANWA, 1969
Nesbert Mukomberanwa was born in
1969 in Masvingo, Zimbabwe. He first began scultping when he was
14 but his serious involvment in sculpture really began in 1987
under his uncle's, Nicholas Mukomberanwa, tutelage.
Since 1989 he has been working independently
and has in recent years gained increasing exposure. Most commonly
his sculptures are figurative, incorporating smooth rounded forms,
and miniaturised heads. He is clearly comfortable with his chosen
medium, recognising and harnessing its qualities in the creation
of his sculptural forms. This ability is particularly evident in
works which incorporate the stone's natural rough texture with smooth
polished surfaces.
Nesbert
currently works in Chitungwiza, a high density suburb of Harare,
where he founded the "Village Gallery".
Nesbert Mukomberanwa has exhibited
almost everywhere in the world. Recent group exhibitions featuring
his work have been held in the Netherlands (2001), Switzerland (2002),
UK (2002) and USA (2003). Extremely gifted he is currently one of
the most well established stone sculptors from Zimbabwe and can
be counted amongst the most significant talents of Zimbabwe's 'second
(or post - independence) generation' of sculptors along with Norbert
Shamuyarira and the late Brighton Sango.
