Jacob AFOLABI, 1940
Jacob Afolabi was born in 1940 in
Ikirun, Nigeria. He was the first artist to flourish from a workshop
in Oshogbo, Nigeria in 1962. While first employed as an actor there,
Jacob Afolabi was soon to become internationally known as a printmaker,
muralist, painter, textile artist and gallery director. He
is currently working with the African Studies Museum in Oshogbo.
Afolabi's flowing images and morph
figures are constantly reinvented in various elastic shapes seemingly
in motion.
In some works it is as if electrical
currents send sudden shock waves into the composition.
One of his murals once enlivened
a gas station wall along one of Oshogbo's main streets.
